The Joint Command and General Staff Course (JCGSC) 2015/016 of the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) conducted its International Study Tour (IST) from 8th – 13th May 2016. According to BALTDEFCOL´s educational policy the IST participants were divided into three different directions in order to promote a more tailored study experience. This year the directions were western, central and southern Europe (France-Belgium- The Netherlands, Germany- Poland and Italy). The aim of the study tour was to expose students to NATO and national strategic and operational insights into processes as well as to discuss current security related issues and to conduct military history case studies on site.
In this respect students participated in various case studies (the 1943-1944 Italian campaign, 1945 Seelow Heights battle and 1944 Operation Market Garden) which allowed them to discuss the political-strategic background of the campaigns and operational objectives.
The IST 2016 group Western Europe conducted a visit to Land Command Force and Rapid Reaction Corps Headquarter in France and NATO Command entities (SHAPE, Joint Force Command Brunssum, NATO E-3A Component and CAOC Uedem). In addition the delegation had briefings at the NATO Command & Control Centre of Excellence located in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
The IST 2016 group in Italy visited the Joint Force Command Naples, the command and control flag ship USS Mount Whitney, the ITA Centre for Higher Defence Studies, the NATO Defence College and the Italian Joint Operational Command in Rome.
For Germany-Poland direction students started tour in Germany by visiting the Ministry of Defence, Operational Command, Air Force Command, after they went to Poland Szczecin Multinational Corps North East located in as well as visited Polish national unit - 12 Mechanized Division.
BALTDEFCOL will continue to offer students international study tours to NATO/EU and Baltic related institutions and places.
