From Narva to NATO: 100 years of Russia versus the West, 1917-2017

2017 marks the centenary of the Russian Revolution, which brought the Bolsheviks into power and laid the foundations for the 70-year Cold War between the Soviet Union and the Western Powers.

As a part of its continued effort to promote a better understanding of the Russian challenge, the Baltic Defence College is pleased to announce the 8th Annual Baltic Military History Conference.

The conference will focus on exploring how lessons from the past can offer a guideline to develop a viable defence policy for the Baltic states and their allies. The College therefore invites academics, researchers and military personnel to contribute to the event in order to enhance the current understanding of the Russian challenge, both within the regional and international contexts.

The exchange of ideas will improve our perception of military history in a broader framework and will also provide an opportunity to discuss them during the follow-on panel sessions. The organisers are open to ideas and recommendations coming from people who are interested in the areas of study within the theme of the conference.

Non-linear Warfare: The Russian Challenge

The aim of this conference was to bring together military officers, scholars and analysts from the Baltic States and other Euro-Atlantic countries to examine the challenges from Russia in relation to non-linear warfare.

The Third Annual Conference on Russia offered keynote presentations, but also panel discussions which allowed participants to share their ideas and experiences in the sphere of modern Russian studies.

The conference focused on the following topics:

• Theorising non-linear warfare in the twenty-first century;
• Doctrinal, strategy and operational-level components of Russia’s modern warfare;
• Case studies on particular types of non-linear warfare in various national and regional contexts (e.g., political, information, narrative, memetic, electronic, cyber in Ukraine, Syria and the Wider Baltic region);
• Responding to the challenge of non-linear warfare.
