Seminar on “Impact of Korean Peninsula Tensions on Regional Security and Beyond”

On 5th of February, visiting professor Matthias Maass, PhD, delivered a seminar at Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) entitled “Impact of Korean Peninsula Tensions on Regional Security and Beyond.” Students and faculty from the BALTDEFCOL and the University of Tartu discussed the implications of the stand-off with North Korea to Asia, Europe and the Baltics. Additionally, participants questioned Dr. Maass about the findings of his recent research and book, Small States in World Politics: The story of Small state survival, 1648-2016.


Matthias Maass is Associate Professor of International Relations at Yonsei University’s Graduate School of International Studies in Seoul, Korea, where he teaches International Relations Theory and International Public Law. Previously, he has held professorial positions in Singapore, Hawai’i, France, and Vietnam. He received his PhD from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy/Tufts University. He is the author of a monograph, and editor of two multi-author volumes; he has published in a variety of academic journals worldwide. In addition to the small state, he is interested in Northeast Asian security, US politics, and International Law. He is co-founder of the Korean International Studies Association and member of the International Studies Association’s Global South Caucus.
