Visit by Major General Martin Herem, Commander of Estonian Defence Forces and induction into BALTDEFCOL Hall of Fame

On 26th of February 2019, we had the honour to host Major General Martin Herem, Commander of Estonian Defence Forces at the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL).

MG Herem was inducted into the BALTDEFCOL’s Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was established in 2016to provide a prestigious and visible means of recognition to graduates of Baltic Defence College who have attained, through military merit, the highest positions in their nation's armed forces, or who have held an equivalent position by rank or responsibility in public institution. MG Herem is a graduate of the Baltic Defence College’s Senior Staff Course 2001/2002 and Higher Command Studies Course 2012. He is also the first Estonian educated officer to hold the position of the Commander of Estonian Defence Forces since Estonia’s restoration of independence. In his speech, MG Herem shared humorous reminiscences about the early days of his career. He also noted that one of the most valuable assets he has gained from BALTDEFCOL is the knowledge about military cultures of different countries.

After the induction ceremony, MG Herem joined BALTDEFCOL staff and students in celebrating the BALTDEFCOL’s 20th Anniversary, Estonian Independence Day and Lithuanian Restoration of the State Day.

MG Herem also met the Estonian military faculty and students, had an office call with Major General Andis Dilāns, the Commandant of BALTDEFCOL and received a presentation on current activities and future developments of the College. The Commander of Estonian Defence Forces expressed his willingness to support the College mission and appreciation of the BALTDECOL role in educating senior Estonian officers. MG Dilāns presented the copy of the BALTDEFCOL History Book „20 Years of the Baltic Defence College: Professional Military Education in the Baltic States” to MG Herem.
