The Conference on Russia changes its perspective biennially, and as the 2020 iteration “Russia in the World: Vision and Realities” focused on internal discussions within Russia – the 2021 Conference is focusing on how the West is preparing, reacting, and responding to Russian activities at these times of turmoil.
Elites inside Russia are increasingly debating over an alternative world order, to distinguish itself from the rest of the world. The West ascribes to liberal democratic traditions that are alien, even menacing, for the Russian elites as well as ordinary citizens inside of Russia. Adjusting to the West for the vast majority means abandoning the well-known conservative values: Slavic traditions over the rest as seen by Solzhenitsyn à la the Russian empire, Orthodox creed against diversity, collective values vs individual, and conservative vs liberal.
The West with its liberal understanding of the world considers the debate over worldviews and values to be healthy. These debates, however, are much less a part of the Russian worldview. How does Russia perceive and respond to these debates from the West? How are they interpreted?
