Today, on 28th April, the students of the Higher Command Studies Course and the Joint Command and General Staff Course had the privilege to listen to a virtual lecture by a distinguished speaker, General André Lanata, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation. General Lanata was confirmed by the North Atlantic Council as Supreme Allied Commander Transformation on 7th June 2018.
The lecture was followed by the office call with Brigadier General Ilmar Tamm, the Commandant of the Baltic Defence College.
During the lecture, General Lanata highlighted the role of NATO in preserving stability in the world and the ability to "adapt to multipolar evolution of international environment". He highlighted the importance of ACT to "take care about today and tomorrow" and the responsibility to shape "the short- and long-term adaptation of NATO's military instrument of power". It was pointed out that NATO is based on the synergy of the contribution of all its members allowing them to get more than just the sum of its member's capabilities. General Lanata also recognized that the current security environment is characterized by complexity, instability, and unpredictability.
He also noted that "the ACT is researching options for NATO to adapt to the new technological innovation in military affairs, which should be a constituent of Professional Military Education curricula". The lecture was wrapped up with the active questions/answers session with focused questions from the audience. It included General Lanata sharing his thoughts toward military leadership to face an unknown future and the quickly evolving warfare.
