On 20-21 September, nineteen officers and civilians from the US Army Advanced Strategic Leadership Studies Program (ASLSP) visited the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL). The program is a senior level course of the School of Advanced Military Studies, which lasts 24-months and prepares senior officers for assignments by converging on assessing and developing national strategic policy.
The delegation was welcomed by the Deputy Commandant/ Chief of Staff Colonel Dietmar Hartung accompanied by the Dean, Dr hab Colonel (ret) Zdzislaw Sliwa and the US Senior National Representative, LTC Danny Looney. The US delegation received a thorough briefing on BALTDEFCOL’s mission, vision, courses, academic activities, and ongoing developments allowing to comprehend the specific character of the College as Professional Military Education institution.
During the visit, the ASLSP officers also participated in different electives (e.g. Military Security of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania or Foreign Policy Analysis and Decision Making) joining the officers from the BALTDEFCOL Joint Command and General Staff Course (JCGSC). It allowed US delegation to gain valuable insights from the faculty and JCGSC participants within discussion while providing JCGSC students with valuable insights and perspectives as presented by experienced senior leaders.
The program will continue on 21 September, when the US delegation will attend the Military History Conference, which focuses on war summer in the Baltic countries in 1941. The topic on the conference will be quite compatible because the main aim of the visit is to develop an understanding of the strategic situation in the Baltics (and Finland) with attention on relation with neighbors, civil-military relations, and historical perspective.
