Visit by General Daniel Hokanson, Chief of US National Guard Bureau
On 14th June, the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) had the honor to host
General Daniel Hokanson, Chief of the US National Guard Bureau. GEN Hokanson
serves as a military adviser to the President, Secretary of Defense, and
National Security Council and is the Department of Defense’s official channel
of communication to the Governors and State Adjutants General on all matters
pertaining to the National Guard.
The high-level officer and his delegation were welcomed by the Commandant,
Brigadier General Ilmar Tamm, members of the College Management Group, and the
United State Senior National Representative, LTC Danny Looney.
During the visit, both delegations held a Roundtable conversation on
BALTDEFCOL’s perspectives and education on Baltic Region Security and beyond.
The interactive discussion covered topics of great importance from a regional
perspective including Russia, the role of NATO, and the European Union. Within
the discussions, the College’s contribution to research in the field was
explained in the context of academic events and publications. The possible
areas of cooperation were also discussed and both parties expressed sincere
interest in closer cooperation.
The United States has contributed to the College since its establishment.
Every year, the US sends students to different BALTDEFCOL courses along with
supporting education by recognized Guest Speakers and Subject Matter Experts.
In addition, the College faculty includes two US faculty members, who are
covering specific areas of education. In total, BALTDEFCOL has had 56 students
from US and 14 faculty members sent by US Army.
