The Annual Conference of the International Society of Military Sciences
The Military University Institute of Portugal (MUI) hosted the 14th Annual
Conference of the International Society of Military Sciences from the 11th to
the 13th of October in Lisbon.
The main topic of the ISMS 2022 conference was ‘Promoting Peace and Security
in a new incomprehensible and non-linear world”. This academic event started
with a joint meeting of the ISMS Council; the plenary session was inaugurated
by the Commandant of MUI, Lieutenant General Martins Pereira followed by the
lecture by IUM’s Professor António Telo.
During the conference, some 200 participants from 24 countries, both in person
and online, presented their research within 10 Working Groups that represent
each area of knowledge of the Military Sciences. The Baltic Defence College
was represented by the Dean Dr. Zdzislaw Sliwa, who is ISMS Council member,
and he delivered a brief related to Baltic Region security. Mr Art Johanson
led discussion panels as the Chair of the Working Group 2 Military
History.
The conference was summarized by The ISMS President, Kontreadmiral João Paulo
Ramalho Marreiros from the Military University Institute of Portugal, who
handed over the Presidency to Professor Niels Bo Poulsen from the Royal Danish
Defence College in Denmark as the next ISMS conference will be held in
Copenhagen.
The Military University Institute provides training and education to the
officers of the Armed Forces and the Guarda Nacional Republicana (National
Republican Guard) throughout their careers, enabling them to perform command
and staff duties within their own branches, combined joint forces, and within
national or international institutions/organizations.
The International was established in October 2008 to further research and
academic education in military arts and sciences in the broadest sense. The
purpose of ISMS is to build a network for the creation, development, exchange,
and diffusion of research and knowledge about war, conflict management, and
peace support efforts.
