Command Senior Enlisted Leaders’ Course started the second residential block

Command Senior Enlisted Leaders’ Course (CSELC) 2022 completed the First Phase of the residential course on Friday, 30 September 2022, after covering the study modules on Strategic Leadership and National Security during three very intensive weeks. The quality-learning environment was created with the help of lectures, small group tasks, study trips and panels. Moreover, during this period a few peer-to-peer engagements were conducted, helping to raise cultural, security and defence policy-related awareness. The educational block finished in high spirits, as the course participants were exposed to interesting and engaging academic lectures and small group activities. During the five-week non-residential phase, the 24 participants from 17 nations worked intensively to develop their course papers, researching topics related to the future development of the National and/or NATO NCO corps or addressing the various aspects of the security environment, security and defence policy, defence strategy, or defence management. In cooperation with the assigned supervisors, from BALTDEFCOL and respective organizations, the hardship of composing the paper in line with the academic standards was successfully overcome.

Returning from completing the demanding, argumentative essays and related policy papers, the class has met again in a classroom environment to face the next challenges during in the Final Phase of CSELC 2022. Collectively the class will be traversing through International Security Challenges and contextualizing one of the subjects close to the Baltic States soul– Russia! In addition, different aspects of current and future warfare will be covered.

On Friday, 4 Nov, the Course had the privilege to examine critically the contentious issue of Russia in the High North and Arctic power play. They also discussed Russia and China’s ambitions vs. reality in the region.  The topic was expertly delivered by a retired Air Vice Marshal Michael Hart from the Cambridge University.

The first week concluded with a presentation from USSPACECOM on Multidimensional Warfare – Space & Cyber.  Chief Master Sergeant Jacob Simmons and his team travelled from Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, USA expressing the USSPACECOM readiness to contribute to the CSEL Course.

The Group is looking forward to the continuation of the engagements with distinguished guest speakers, panels, and exercises during this phase.
