Welcometo the Joint Command and General Staff Course2021/2022

On behalf of the College, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to attend the Joint Command and General Staff Course (JCGSC), the academic year 2021-2022, at the Baltic Defence College, located in the historical university town of Tartu, Estonia.

The next ten months promise exciting experiences for you as a member of our student body. At JCGSC, you will broaden your horizons, experience leadership opportunities, apply critical thinking, establish lifelong friendships, and, of course, have fun. One key prerequisite for your academic success is, of course, your own personal engagement. Work hand-in-hand and interact actively with our teaching staff and fellow course members.

Despite the exceptional circumstances around the world, I hope the College is able to conduct all the learning process in-house but also be prepared to receive at least part of your education through distance learning, via an interactive internet-based intellectual environment. Whatever may happen, expect challenges, be ready to adapt, and focus on education.

The Joint Command and General Staff Course is one of the College’s core courses and provides you with many benefits:

  • Electives
  • Study Trips/Staff Rides (Baltic Defence Study Trip/Staff Ride Op ALBION)
  • In-house Exercise JOINT RESOLVE 2021
  • Distinguished visitors and skilled Guest Speakers
  • Conferences and Roundtables
  • Team Building Athletics
  • Possibility to enroll for Professional Master’s degree in Military Leadership and Security offered by Latvian National Defence Academy [more information is available here: https://www.naa.mil.lv/index.php/en/node/681]

More information on these activities and studies can be found in the Course Plan (Enclosure 1), which should be read prior to your arrival. Detailed weekly plans and other course-related documents will be issued at the beginning of the academic year and will be placed into the College’s Advanced Distributed Learning System (E-learning environment) ILIAS.

No later than 1stJuly2021, please complete the in-processing (Enclosure 2) form and submit it as stated in the instructions. If you have any questions regarding further information and guidance on accommodation, transport, check-in times, and other procedures, please contact the Registrar, Ms. Kaie Ehrenberg ([email protected]).

The 16th of August 2021 will mark the start of a study period of your professional military education. On the first day, we will conduct an official opening ceremony and provide you with an overview of the course and administrative details. The dress code will be Service Dress*.

To prepare students for a common standard attending the course, an Initial Unit (Enclosure3) must be completed using ILIAS. The unit provides an introduction or review of knowledge for the residential modules, focused on Leadership, Fundamentals and Components, International Security Environment, Research Project, Electives 1, and additional information to facilitate student’s preparation for the 1st semester. The Initial Unit will be available before the student's arrival at the College [NLT 01st JULY] and must be completed in accordance with the deadlines set in the instructions on ILIAS.

During the course, students are expected to give a brief about their respective countries (not longer than 40 min) to the coursemates. Start to organise and collect your ideas to be adequately prepared.

My colleagues and I stand by to support and challenge you as you take full advantage of these extraordinary opportunities. Study hard and enjoy your experience at the Baltic Defence College.
