BALTDEFCOL students’ gift to the local community

For several years Baltic Defence College has had a tradition of organizing Christmas charity for children with mobility impairments. This year the initiative was taken over by the students of Joint Command and General Staff Course. Major Stig Nilsen from Royal Norwegian Air Force says that it is important for the Baltic Defence College to give back to the local community.

On Friday, October 16th a fundraising was initiated to help Lastefond (Children’s Fund) buy a bed-side monitor for the Tartu Children Clinic. Lastefond’s charity box was set up in the college lobby, so that everybody who wants to give his or her contribution for the campaign could make a donation. The donation box will remain available until the first week of December, when the campaign ends. The box will also be set up at the International Night held on November 6th. Additionally, the donations can be made directly to the Lastefond bank accounts with writing BALTDEFCOL on the subject line.

Tartu University Clinic’s Children’s Fund is one of Estonia’s biggest and oldest charity funds acting by children hospitals. Their main mission is finding new apparatus to Children Clinic, supporting the cure of extraordinary medical cases all over Estonia and training Estonian doctors and nurses. In the recent years Children’s Fund has also started cooperating more with volunteers.

Besides fundraising, the students have engaged themselves in other activities, such as helping with organizing the Christmas party for children with mobility impairments and helping with elementary maintenance works at the Tammistu Family Centre. With the latter the students have already started in the Tammistu manor park.

The students’ cooperation partner is Estonian Agrenska Foundation which is the main actor behind the restoration of the old Tammistu manor for the families of handicapped children. Estonian Agrenska Foundation is working for the development of family support services to enhance the quality of life of children with disabilities and their families. Also they are organizing counselling and education to their network and professionals involved.
