The Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) started its new school year on 9 August with the assembling of the Joint Command and General Staff Course (JCGSC) 2010/2011 and the Higher Command Studies Course (HCSC) 2010.
The core mission of the BALTDEFCOL is accomplished through the 11 month long JCGSC 2009/2010 which is a unique course within the context of NATO as it is the only example of several nations deciding against educating their general staff officers on a national basis and instead opting to pool their resources to provide a common education for their officials at this level of professional development.
The student body of the JCGSC 2010/2011 consists of a mix of students from different nations. This year, the JCGSC welcomed 53 students from 16 different countries. Students come from Estonia (10), Latvia (14), Lithuania (12), Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Georgia (2), Germany (2), the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (2), Poland, Ukraine (2) and the USA.
The other course, the HCSC 2010 is the seventh HCSC offered by the College and is built upon the foundations of successful courses we have run in the past six years. The course lately received accreditation by NATO’s Allied Command Transformation (ACT) as a NATO course and is part of NATO Course Catalogue.
The HCSC is a 4.5 month long course, where many widely known international lecturers, consultants and high ranking officers give lectures.
This year, the HCSC has 11 students representing 7 countries. The students represent Estonia (4), Latvia (1), Lithuania (2), Georgia, New Zealand, Slovenia and Ukraine.
