Lithuanian re-independence greeting

“Today, 16 February, marks the ninety – third anniversary of the formal declaration of Lithuanian re-independence. On this day the Council of Lithuania issued the Act of Independence which proclaimed restoration of the independent state of Lithuania, governed by democratic principles with Vilnius as its capital. The act still serves as the foundational document of the modern Republic of Lithuania. In February 1918, Lithuania was under German occupation and German authorities prohibited the publication of the act. However, Lithuanian patriots secretly printed and distributed it through out the country. With the end of German occupation in November 1918, the Lithuanian government could operate openly, yet Lithuania’s struggle for independence would continue for another two years. I would like to extend congratulations to our Lithuanian colleagues and friends on this most momentous day.”

Respectfully,

Meelis Kiili
Brigadier General
Commandant
