Visiting Fellowship Programme for Spring 2017

To enhance its research activities, promote the strategic research community within the Baltic States, and support its education, the Baltic Defence College runs a Visiting Fellowship Programme. This programme is designed to provide the opportunity for two researchers annually – one during spring and one during autumn semesters – to join the College staff and engage in independent research projects and teaching activities.

Interviews anticipated on: 11 – 18 January 2017

Details about specific timelines for conducting the fellowship will be discussed separately with applicants selected for interviews after a meeting of BALTDEFCOL’s Selection Board.

Resources

Every Visiting Fellow will be offered the following support during the period of residency in Tartu:

  • Budget: €700.00 (for accommodation for three months); €500.00 (for transport to and from Tartu); and €2,800.00 (for research purposes);
  • Stipend: No stipend is offered – this position is ideal for a researcher on sabbatical from another institution;
  • Accommodation: Dormitory (Ida Street , one bedroom apartment);
  • Facilities: office space and IT support provided by the Baltic Defence College.

Output Requirements

Every Visiting Fellow should expect to undertake the following during their time at the Baltic Defence College:

  • Research output: One presentation at a Roundtable Seminar in relation to research focus and one 4,000-7,000 word academic article (to be published in the Journal on Baltic Security);
  • Internal research progress seminar: to present the status of research and major results;
  • Teaching output: Ad-hoc assistance with academic conferences, seminars, roundtable discussions, support for education within courses at the Baltic Defence College based on the area of expertise.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Advanced academic degree in International Relations, Strategic/Defence Studies, International Law, Military History, European Security or related field;
  • Participation in at least one previous research project, resulting in an academic (or related) publication.
  • The research proposals focusing on deterrence, defence capabilities, territorial defence within the Baltic Region, the Wider Baltic and related to Russia.
