COL Dietmar Hartung

Deputy Commandant/Chief of Staff


Born in 1959, Colonel GS Dietmar Hartung grew up in Fulda, Hessen, Germany. After achieving the university-entrance diploma, he joined the German Air Force in 1979. Colonel GS Hartung graduated from the German Armed Forces University in Hamburg with a Master's in Economics and Organizational Science. He has completed the General Staff Officers Course at the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College.

He entered the German Armed Forces as an officer candidate. After officer training at the German Air Force Academy, he was trained as a logistics officer, followed by several assignments, e.g. as Chief of Logistic Department (A 4) at HQ 1. Air Force Division, Commanding Officer German Air Force Material Depot 81 and Deputy Branch Chief Logistics Division Federal Ministry of Defense Joint Support Service. Other notable assignments were Military Assistant to the Vice Chief of Defense/Chief of Defense Joint Support Service and Base Commander at Air Force Base Cologne-Bonn.

As Colonel, he served as Chief Logistics Division (A 4) German Air Force Office (2006-2007), Chief of MN Logistics Division (CJ4) German Response Forces Operations Command in Ulm (2008-2009), Director Plans and Policy G 4 Joint Support Command in Cologne (2010-2012) and Director Plans and Policy Bundeswehr Logistics Command in Erfurt (2013-2015). This tour included a 6 months deployment as Chief CJ4 to ISAF, Regional Command North, Mazar-e­ Sharif, Afghanistan in 2013.

From 2015-2021 he served as Director Plans and Policy IT-Support and Program Executive Officer SASPF at the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In Service Support in Bonn.

Within the responsibility for the German Armed Forces Enterprise Resource Planning System, essential tasks were the development and implementation of complex IT­ projects, contracting authority and service provider management, as well as the development of the Defense and Security Solution as German Speaker at the SAP user group “Defense interest Group (DEIG)”.

Colonel GS Hartung is married to Andrea. They have two adult children: Michael and Luisa.
