9th Annual Baltic Military History Conference 2018

On 13th and 14th of September, the Baltic Defence College hosted the 9th Annual Baltic Military History Conference titled "1918-2018 Hundred years of armed forces development". As many countries, including Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, the Conference addressed the development and fate of the armed forces of a number of Eastern European and Caucasian countries over the last 100 years. Special attention was given to the role of military education in the developmental process of the armed forces.

The keynote speech of the Conference was delivered by the first Commandant of the BALTDEFCOL, Brigadier General (ret) Michael H. Clemmesen who compared the creation of Baltic States’ National Defence Forces in 1918-19 and 1991-95.

The two days of the Conference were full of interesting presentations and productive discussions. Altogether, 17 panelists and close to 100 participants attended the event and contributed to the discussions. For the first time, the Conference was integrated into the curricula of the Joint Command and General Staff Course 2018/2019.

General Sir James Everard, KCB, CBE, Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR) ended this year’s conference with the closing speech on “The Future Character of Warfare”.

The Baltic Defence College is grateful to all the participants of the Annual Baltic Military History Conference 2018. See you again next year!
