The Baltic Defence College Commandant Major General Andis Dilans and faculty members attended the Annual Baltic Conference on Defence (ABCD) 2017 titled “European Defence Cooperation: Out of the Shadows?” The conference organised by the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Estonia and the International Centre for Defence and Security (ICDS) took place in Tallinn on 5th-6th September 2017.
The ABCD 2017 was conducted in the format of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) seminar as a constituent of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The focus was on discussing strategic questions about the EU’s role in international security and defence and the future of the European defence cooperation.

The keynote speech was addressed by H.E. Kersti Kaljulaid, the President of Estonia who highlighted the importance of NATO and EU as security providers within collective defence effort and the need to tackle challenges together. The conference was composed of the opening session and three discussion panels and speakers included among others: Jüri Luik, Minister of Defence, Estonia; General Mikhail Kostarakos, Chairman of the European Union Military Committee; Philippe Errera, Ministry of Armed Forces, France; Jan Salestrand, State Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Sweden. The conference covered upcoming challenges related to security cooperation and it provided interesting insights before EU Defence Ministers’ meeting in Tallinn next day. |
