Biography

General Sir John (Jack) Deverell was born in Birmingham on 27th April 1945. He was educated at King Edward’s School, Bath, attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was commissioned into the Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry in December 1965.

As a young officer he served in a variety of appointments in Aden, Germany and Northern Ireland as well as Norway, Belize and Canada. He attended Division II of the Army Staff Course at the Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham between 1975 and 1976 before attending the Royal Naval Staff College in 1977.

He then served as Chief of Staff, 3rd Infantry Brigade in Northern Ireland, was a company commander in Tidworth and Cyprus and a company commander at RMA Sandhurst before commanding 3rd Battalion, The Light Infantry in Tidworth and Northern Ireland between 1984 and 1986. After command, he was a member of the Directing Staff and latterly Military Director of Studies of Weapons and Vehicles Division RMCS, Shrivenham before commanding 1st Infantry Brigade (United Kingdom Mobile Force) in Tidworth between 1988 and 1990.

After attending the Indian National Defence College in New Delhi in 1991, he was appointed Director Army Recruiting before becoming Director General Army Manning and Recruiting in the rank of Major General. Between 1995 and 1997 he was Commandant of RMA Sandhurst and then appointed as Deputy Commander in Chief Land Command and Inspector General Territorial Army in the rank of Lieutenant General until 2001. During that appointment, from September 1998 to March 1999, he was Deputy Commander Operations SFOR in Bosnia.

General Deverell’s last appointment was in NATO as Commander in Chief, Allied Forces Northern Region based in Brunssum, the Netherlands in the rank of General. He retired from the Army in May 2004 and is currently the Deputy Chairman of SOE Academy, a Counter Terrorist and Security Training and Education Organisation and a Military Consultant for EDS Defence.
