The Baltic Defence College had the honour to welcome the NATO Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT), General Denis Mercier, on Thursday the 26th May 2016.

The aim of the visit was to identify ways to improve the interaction between Allied Command Transformation (ACT) and BALTDEFCOL on the common topics. General Denis Mercier was welcomed by Major General Vitalijus Vaikšnoras, Commandant of the BALTDEFCOL. “You are a college of excellence and I hope we will continue to work together to prepare the future of our Alliance” wrote SACT in his entry to our guest book.

Office call was followed by the meeting with BALTDEFCOL Management where SACT delegation was given a detailed presentation on the BALTDEFCOL’s history, its vision, mission, strategic goals and main lines of effort.

Visit was concluded with General Mercier’s lecture to the students of Higher Command Studies Course, Joint Command and General Staff Course and BALTDEFCOL Faculty. During his presentation he spoke about NATO’s future and the challenges the alliance faces as well as shared his views on the upcoming WARSAW summit. Reviewing the development and adaptation of the alliance, the SACT highlighted that the threats NATO is facing today are not something totally new, but the difference is their concurrency, complexity and interrelated nature that is challenging us. General Mercier underlined that since its foundation NATO has managed to adapt to every security challenge, and will continue to do so.

General Mercier took the command of the Alliance Transformation on 30th September 2015.
