From 16th to 26th of April, the students of the Joint Command and General Staff Course (JCGSC) 2017/2018 and staff members of the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) are participating in the Combined Joint Staff Exercise VIKING 18 in the Kingdom of Sweden.
Exercise Viking 18 is organised by the Swedish Armed Forces in cooperation with the Folke Bernadotte Academy. The exercise includes 2 500 participants from 50 countries and 35 organisations. Viking 18 is the world’s largest exercise of its kind. The aim of Viking 18 is to train and educate participants to meet the challenges of current and future multidimensional crisis response and peace operations.
During the exercise, BALTDEFCOL’s students are working in a Combined Joint Task Force and Command Headquarters together with military and civilian participants of the exercise from other participating countries and agencies/organisations. The focus for the exercise is to train and educate combined joint staff methods and procedures. Numerous OTTM-participants (observers, trainers, trackers and mentor) are observing and, if needed, guiding the training audience.
BALTDEFCOL’s Commandant, Major General Andis Dilāns visited the exercise on 20th of April and participated in the Prominent Visitors’ Day. MG Dilāns met with the Exercise Director, MG Anders Brännström and received briefings on the concept and execution of Viking 18. He also had a tour on the exercise premises. During his visit, MG Dilāns hosted a barbeque for BALTDEFCOL students and senior staff of the VIKING 2018 exercise. The BALTDEFCOL BBQ has become an annual tradition for students participating in the two-week exercise in Sweden.
