On 14 August, the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) welcomed the students for Joint Command and General Staff Course (JCGSC) 2023/2024 and Civil Servant's Course (CSC) 2023/2024 and officially started the academic year.

This year 14 nations are represented in the student body. Students from Canada, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, the United States, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Sweden and Ukraine have started their studies at BALTDEFCOL this academic year.
In the opening ceremony, Commandant of BALTDEFCOL Brigadier General (LTU Army) Alvydas Šiuparis addressed the students and staff and wished everyone a successful academic year, and emphasised three pillars he will be focusing on during his three-year term as a Commandant.

He highlighted: “Ensuring quality of education is the first pillar of my concept and the main effort of the College. The second pillar is contributing to regional security, defence and deterrence efforts. The third and last pillar is maintaining the multinational character of the College.”

During the ceremony, Brigadier General Šiuparis officially unveiled the BALTDEFCOL’s 25th Anniversary Logo by saying: “Today marks the opening of the Academic Year 2023/2024. We look forward to another successful year and to celebrating our college’s 25th anniversary together with you — the Anniversary Courses, staff, alumni, and partners. To honour this achievement, I will present you the 25th Anniversary Logo of the College.”

In his speech, Brigadier General Šiuparis also encouraged the students to explore Tartu City and enjoy the Tartu 2024 program while studying at the BALTDEFCOL.
