Successful Execution of Staff Ride “Albion – 2025” on Saaremaa

The Baltic Defence College’s Staff Ride “Albion – 2025” for the Joint Command and General Staff Course (JCGSC) was conducted on the Estonian island of Saaremaa from 22 to 24 October 2025.

Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on Joint operations utilizing the historical Operation ALBION case study from October 1917. As the first large-scale joint amphibious military operation ever conducted, Operation ALBION is recognized as an extremely useful event with which to further participants’ knowledge of joint operations in a truly interactive learning environment.

The three-day program included a comprehensive itinerary, which involved visits to key historical sites such as the Kaali Meteorite Crater, a guided tour of Kuressaare Castle, and the Salme Viking ship burial site, as well as presentations at the Baltic Workboat Shipyard and a professional development  seminar.

Feedback from participants and facilitators was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees highlighted the value of practical exercises during the terrain walk and subsequent discussions at each location, which ranged from Tagga Bay and the former Kilkehonna Air Station in the North to the Southern Sorve peninsula and Poide church to the East. The Staff Ride “Albion – 2025” successfully enhanced understanding of Historical content as well as contemporary warfighting doctrine and joint operational capabilities, fulfilling its stated aim and objectives.
