On the 30th of January, the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) hosted a visit by Lieutenant General Michael Claesson, Chief of Defence Staff of the Swedish Armed Forces.
The high-level officer and his delegation were welcomed by the Deputy Commandant/ Chief of Staff, Colonel Dietmar Hartung, Dean of the College, Dr. Zdzislaw Sliwa (COL (ret.) ), Director of the Department of Military Studies, Colonel Dzintars Roga, and Mr. Louis Wierenga, Lecturer in International Relations. The visit started with a briefing session where LTG Claesson received a general overview of the College's historical background, mission, and tasks and learned about the various courses and academic activities conducted at the BALTDEFCOL.
During the meeting between our guests and the college’s leadership, various aspects of possible Swedish contributions to future BALTDEFCOL projects were discussed. The discussion revealed common interests related to education at the strategic and operational levels, and special attention was dedicated to the planning and execution of operations during exercises conducted by the Swedish Armed Forces and BALTDEFCOL.
The visit continued with a lecture, “The Swedish perspective on the Baltic Sea Region security environment in light of Russia’s war of aggression,” to the Higher Command and Studies Course (HCSC) 2023. The lectures received great appreciation from students; therefore, it was followed by a discussion inspired by students’ questions. The focus was on Sweden’s path to NATO membership, the future of reform of the Swedish Armed Forces, and reflection on regional security. Lieutenant General Claesson shared interesting insights for the HCSC participants to take into consideration."
