On 18th of January, Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) had the honour to host General Riho Terras, Chief of Defence of Estonia and Vice Admiral Duncan Potts CB, Director General Joint Force Development and Defence Academy accompanied by Commander Gary Brook, Defence Attaché of UK and LTC Chris Hakes RA, Military Assistant to VADM Potts. The high-level guests were welcomed by the Commandant, Major General Andis Dilāns and the members of College Management Group. The visits were initiated with office calls with MG Dilāns.
During his visit, VADMS Potts was, furthermore, given a thorough presentation on BALTDEFCOL followed by discussion related to military education including integration of civil servants into engagement with military personnel. GEN Terras had a meeting with MG Dilāns during which different topical issues were discussed.
GEN Terras and VADM Potts participated in the panel discussion “The Role of Strategic Leadership in Support of Deterrence Efforts across all Domains – A PME Perspective” for the students of Higher Command Studies Course 2018 and BALTDEFCOL faculty. The discussion was moderated by Senior Mentor CDRE (ret) Hans Helseth. Both military leaders highlighted the importance of developing creative and adaptable strategic leaders to lead own nations in evolving and complex security environment along with significance of understanding the essence of deterrence to communicate it to own population and to adversaries. Engagement of high-level political and military leaders to the education of BALTDEFCOL’s students has been a long-term tradition being an important value adding factor for professional and academic development of participants of all the courses.
