Baltic Defence College Staff Meeting: Strengthening the Future of Professional Military Education


The Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) convened its staff meeting to review the institution's progress and outline future objectives in professional military education. The meeting underscored the BALTDEFCOL's commitment to maintaining its status as a hub of knowledge for military leadership and strategy in the Baltic region.

One of the key highlights of the meeting was the recognition of the college's growing influence. Commandant of the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL), Brigadier General Alvydas Šiuparis, expressed pride in the institution's increasing student numbers.

"A growing number of students is a recognition of the college and our efforts in the field of professional military education in the region. This growth reflects the college’s reputation for excellence and its vital role in fostering military leadership across diverse nations."

CDT also emphasized the importance of keeping pace with technological advancements and integrating these developments into the curriculum.  He highlighted the necessity of including emerging technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) in military planning and decision-making processes.

“We have to be in front and not behind. Technologies and how to use these in our planning It’s a reality to become a leading institution. This strategic focus ensures that graduates of BALTDEFCOL are equipped to address contemporary challenges effectively."

Another significant topic discussed during the meeting was the Exercise Joint Resolve.  This exercise aims to enhance cooperation and interoperability among partner nations, a cornerstone of modern military operations.

The meeting also celebrated a record number of attendees for upcoming programs and exercises, further illustrating BALTDEFCOL’s appeal and relevance. CDT noted the “increased attention from the FNs” (Framework Nations) as a testament to the institution’s growing prestige.

The staff meeting also provided an opportunity to recognize the remarkable contributions of individuals to the college's mission.

  • Mr Louis Wierenga (United States of America): Awarded for considerable energy and dedication as a Syndicate Guiding Officer for the Joint Command and General Staff Course 2022-2023 and as a Political Advisor to exercises and for enduring service.

  • Ambassador Shota Gvineria (Georgia): Recognized for contributions to the Defence Policy and Strategy Module for the Higher Command Studies Course, representing BALTDEFCOL in academic events, and efforts leading to the publication of the Resilience Referendum by the Partnership for Peace Consortium.

  • Ms Ilva Ecētāja (Latvia): Honored for advancing the college’s image, enhancing its digital workspace, and making significant contributions to BALTDEFCOL conferences.

  • Mr George Spencer Terry (United States of America): Awarded for publishing an article in a highly recognized interdisciplinary journal and contributing to college research and education.

  • Dr Çlirim Toci (Albania): Recognized for presenting an article in the proceedings of an international conference, promoting BALTDEFCOL as a quality professional military education institution.

  • Mr Art Johanson (Estonia): Chosen as the Best Faculty Member of the Academic Year 2024-2025 by CSELC.

CDT concluded the meeting on a note of optimism, describing the college’s outlook as both “optimistic and realistic.” By fostering innovation, collaboration, and excellence, BALTDEFCOL is poised to continue shaping the future of professional military education and reinforcing the security of the Baltic region and beyond. The Baltic Defence College’s commitment to education, innovation, and cooperation ensures its pivotal role in preparing military leaders for the challenges of tomorrow.
