Enhancing Enlisted Leadership: Defence Academy of the United Kingdom’s Collaboration with BALTDEFCOL

From 29-30 January 2025, the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) hosted Wing Commander Vik Mungroo, SO1 Joint Training Requirement Authority, and Warrant Officer Sara Catterall, CSM of Strategic Command, from the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. This visit aimed to review and discuss the pilot framework and content of the Defence Senior Enlisted Leader Programme (DSELP) with the College Sergeant Major (CSM) Alvydas Tamošiūnas and other key BALTDEFCOL staff.

The engagement focused on assessing the DSELP pilot programme by comparing it with BALTDEFCOL’s existing Command Senior Enlisted Leader Course (CSELC), designed for OR9/E9 level personnel. The visit facilitated in-depth discussions with experienced BALTDEFCOL instructors, ensuring the programme aligned with established leadership development standards. The insights CSM Tamošiūnas and the BALTDEFCOL faculty provided were instrumental in refining the DSELP before its final approval.

Following these discussions, SO1 JTRA compiled the findings from the visit into a report for submission to the UK Strategic Command Deputy Commander. This marked a crucial milestone in the evolution of the DSELP initiative, ensuring its alignment with best practices in senior enlisted leadership education.

The assurance visit underscored the commitment of UK Strategic Command and BALTDEFCOL to advancing professional military education for senior enlisted leaders. By leveraging the expertise of BALTDEFCOL instructors and leadership professionals, the DSELP aimed to establish a robust and effective training framework tailored to contemporary military leadership challenges.

During an Office Call with BALTDEFCOL Commandant Brigadier General Alvydas Šiuparis, discussions focused on potential future cooperation between the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom and BALTDEFCOL. These discussions encompassed all of BALTDEFCOL’s education programmes, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration in strengthening interoperability, leadership acumen, and professional growth within senior enlisted ranks. The insights gained from this visit were vital in shaping the future of enlisted leader development within the defence community.

This visit also reinforced the recognition of BALTDEFCOL’s CSELC as a high-quality programme, attracting attention from foreign military education institutions that are developing their equivalent courses. The course’s excellence highlights its growing influence in shaping military education standards and non-commissioned officer (NCO) culture, not only regionally but also globally.
