On 16 May 2025, the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) was pleased to welcome students and faculty from the Sherbrooke École de politique appliquée for a focused academic programme exploring regional security and strategic affairs.
The official visit began with a Regional Security Brief, delivered by Dr Daivis Petraitis and Mr George Spencer Terry, who outlined the key defence and security dynamics shaping the Baltic region today. The session offered valuable insights and generated thought-provoking discussions, enabling participants to link theoretical knowledge with real-world policy challenges.
The previous day, the group explored key historical and cultural sites in northeastern Estonia, accompanied by Mr Art Johanson lecturer of Military History and Strategic Planning who highlighted the military history of the area.
Their first destination was Sinimäe, where they visited the Sinimäe Museum and Battlefield. This site offered a powerful look into the region's wartime history and its enduring legacy.
The day continued in Narva, a city on the Estonian-Russian border known for its symbolic significance and layered history. Johanson’s expert narration provided context on Narva’s complex past and highlighted the city’s role in regional history and identity.
This visit offered an enriching blend of academic learning and cultural exploration. It provided students from Sherbrooke with a unique opportunity to understand the strategic environment of the Baltic region while deepening their awareness of its historical foundations.
