On 9 May 2025, the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) had the honour of hosting Major General Mika Kalliomaa, Rector of the National Defence University of Finland (FNDU), and Brigadier General Mariusz Fryc, Vice-Rector of the War Studies University of Poland (WSU). Both distinguished guests were warmly received by BALTDEFCOL Commandant Brigadier General Alvydas Šiuparis.
During their visit, MG Kalliomaa and BG Fryc engaged in an office call with BG Šiuparis, where they discussed a range of topics of mutual interest. The discussions focused on the strategic importance of military cooperation and the ongoing efforts to enhance defence capabilities in the region. This meeting provided a valuable opportunity for the leaders to exchange insights and strengthen the collaborative framework between their respective commands.
The visit also included a tour of the Combined Joint Staff Exercise JOINT RESOLVE 2025. MG Kalliomaa and BG Fryc met with the exercise participants and contingents from their respective nations. This allowed them to observe the exercise firsthand and discuss its objectives and outcomes with the directing staff.
This year's exercise marks a significant milestone as it will be the first time the full FNDU General Staff Officers Course participates and the second time a sizeable contingent of students from the National Defence University of Ukraine (NDUU) joins the exercise, making CJSE JR25 the largest event since its inception in 2019. The exercise is jointly organised in collaboration with the WSU and the FNDU.
The visit of MG Mika Kalliomaa and BG Mariusz Fryc to BALTDEFCOL underscores the importance of international military cooperation and the shared commitment to enhancing defence capabilities in the region. The exchange of insights and observations during this visit will undoubtedly contribute to the strengthening of the collaborative efforts between all three institutions.
